Hello,

I am new to NDT and have a project that calls for it. I need to detect cracks, as small as 1 micron in width, in the weld of a steel pipe. Has anyone out there had to detect cracks this small or does anyone know which method of testing would be the best?

thanks,
Quintin

What is the size of the specimen that you are welding? Thickness? Material? Are you looking for something surface or subsurface?

I am guessing you are doing penetrant testing. Surface methods are the ones that require defect opening sizes to prove detectability from your procedure.
You will need to purchase a set of chrome crack panels with the 1 micron width and 20 micron depth. Your penetrant should be a type 1 (fluorescent) and sensitivity level 3. Since you are testing welds a method A (water washable) would work best on welds that are not ground smooth. If they are ground smooth than a method C (solvent removable) would give you a little more sensitivity. Your dwell time can be set by experimenting with the panels. Try starting with 25 minutes.
Hope this helps you.
